Day 25: Souris to Dundas Fairgrounds

Saturday, Aug 22

Temperature: High 72°F / Low 64°F
Conditions: Sun turning to clouds
Distance Walked: 27.2k + 2.4k to the ferry

Experience of the Day

Alarm went off at 4:25am. We left the hostel and started our walk to the ferry in the dark 12 minutes later! Fortunately it was only about a kilometer of walking in the dark until we reached the sidewalk and streetlights. Half an hour later, we were there and checked in.

The ferry ride was uneventful as the water was smooth as glass. We sat in the theater area for a while where it was very quiet and we both fell asleep. The same woman performer sang on the ferry again, which was really delightful.

We made our way off the ferry and walked across the parking area to the long staircase up to town. We looked up the stairs and saw a woman standing at the top...we both yelled, "Shirley!" We couldn't believe it...she drove us back to the Shanty Stay where I resumed my walk and Therese got her bicycle ready to roll. As I walked out of town, crossed the bridge, I heard a car honking at me, I looked up and there she was - Shirley! We sure had fun seeing her and getting to know a little bit about her life here in Souris.

Therese rode the bike two sections (Souris to Cardigan), so she has a rest day tomorrow.

The walk out of Souris was really fun along the boardwalk and I exited just in time! I also enjoyed the Fortune Bridge to Bay Fortune part of the route as it was nice to be on the country roads. I knew I was getting low on water so I was starting to look around for a place to fill up. Suddenly as I went up the hill I saw an open house sign! I could not believe my luck -- the house that was for sale was right next to the trail and there was still a half an hour left of the open house. I made my way over and met the realtor and she invited me to sit down and rest for a while. We chit-chatted for a few minutes while I refilled my water containers, but then I really had to get going.

I was EXTREMELY motivated to get as far as possible because rain was forecasted for tomorrow. Our host, Pauline, was to pick me up at 6pm, so I race walked my way over the dirt roads and ended up finishing with an extra 5k. The best part was that I completed the dirt road. So tomorrow I would start on pavement.

At about 5:40pm, I saw a car coming my way. It was Pauline and Therese. I was happy to be done for the day. We were greeted by Roger who brought me a tiny glass of his homemade Chardonnay. It was delicious and the perfect end to a very hard day.
